Hidden Figure: Alice Mae Lee Jemison, Warrior of written words against government intervention of tribal rights
Alice was an outspoken advocate who championed tribal rights. She was incredibly disturbed by the living conditions that the policies of the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and the New Deal created for her people. Jemison relentlessly and vocally criticized the BIA and was determined to protect the Seneca tribe’s civil and treaty rights.

Buffalo Calf Road, a young Cheyenne warrior woman with a gun in one hand, and her baby tied securely to her back, in her early twenties was fighting against the westward expansion of pioneers, miners, and an army seeking to devour and colonize the land on the great plains and force the Lakota Sioux, the Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho onto reservations.
Hidden Figure: Thocmetony Sarah Winnemucca
It was Thocmetony Sarah Winnemucca's duty to make sure her people weren't erased and forgotten. She was a freedom fighter and defender of human rights, in plight to make the world a better place, as ingrained in her by her father Chief Winnemucca.
Why I am here
So why do I, Tierra Stewart, do this work? I look to the past and I sit in the present and I weary at the future and I know there is a stench in the air that doesn’t seem to go away.

The photos on Lead the Way’s website were intentionally selected and each represents pivotal moments in our collective history and journey disrupting structural and oppressive barriers that are the root of injustice, inequity, economical inequality, and social misery.
